Reduction of carbon footprint is not a priority for many business owners. However, going green will save more money from your business and personal life while improving workplace culture. A study conducted in the year 2012 showed that hospitals that work to reduce the amount of waste produced and the energy used managed to save around $15 billion within one decade. Another research that the University of Paris-Dauphine and UCLA conducted showed that employees who work in eco-friendly companies are around 16% more productive than those who work in average companies are.

The researchers concluded that the workers were better trained, motivated and developed good interpersonal relationships, which resulted in higher efficiency in the workplace. The process of making your company eco-friendly is an easier one. It can be as simple as installing a solar system. That will cut the energy bills by nearly a half. Here are other ways of going green and making your business more profitable.

Switching to eco-friendly lighting systems

Light-emitting diode, LED, bulbs will use around 25-80% less energy than the incandescent light bulbs and last nearly 25 times longer. That means more savings on energy costs. Currently, LEDs are more efficient than any other lighting technology on the globe. Some LED bulbs will last for over 25 years. Even though they might be expensive upfront, they are as compact as fluorescent lights and they will pay for themselves when it comes to the replacement and energy saving. Depending on the location and size of your company, you are likely to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year by switching off your 100 bulbs for eight hours each day.

Buying eco-friendly or used furniture

For some individuals, buying second-hand items, especially furniture might not sound like a good idea. However, by purchasing used items you will not only reduce your company’s furniture costs but you will also participate in the reduction of items that end up in landfills. The greenest furniture pieces you can ever buy are the re-used ones. But if you need a new item, go for one built with green materials. For example, wood pieces that Forest Stewardship Council come from the trees grown in socially responsible and sustainable conditions. Bamboo is among the eco-friendly material sources because they grow fast and they do not need pesticides.

Reduce food wastage and encourage healthier eating

If your employees are healthy, you will end up spending less on health care. For your company cafeteria, create incentives for the employees to buy nutrient-rich and heart-healthy foods. A quick example, you can subsidise the salad bar and remove junk foods from your vending machines. Encourage people to eat more plant produce and less before so that you can reduce the carbon footprint of your company.

Find smart ways to reduce food waste in your company. Wasted food has been a big component of waste in landfill sites and it contributes highly to methane emissions. Discarded and uneaten foods make up around 133 billion pounds of the 430 billion pounds available food supply. Start taking the uneaten and leftover cafeteria food and change it into compost. For example, Airline Jet Blue has been taking food waste from the JKF International and giving it to McEnroe Organic Far, which turns it into the soil. Jet Blue buys the soil and uses it in the sustainable rooftop garden situated at the airport.

Conserve water

By choosing energy- and water-efficient appliances, you will save around $300 each year for your small office. By adding inefficient water heaters and toilets, you will spend more and affect the environment negatively. Public institutions and businesses are known to consume over 25% of the water people in metropolitan areas use. One of the easy steps involves fixing all the leaky toilets or faucets. That way, you will save around 90 gallons of water each month. Our Evolve Cleaning team will help you identify other ways to conserve water in your organisation or home.

Go for the eco-friendly paper options or go paperless

You will save even more money by going digital. A more recent report showed that General Electric and Lockheed Martin estimated around $250,000 – $10 billion savings by only digitising the paper manuals and the processes that require printing. If you must print your 50 pages report form the afternoon meeting, remember to print it on recycled paper. To save more money, ask your employees to print double-sided documents and record the messages on the scrap paper.

Many companies are working hard to become eco-friendly. Within the last few years, we have noticed how the environment is changing rapidly due to the bad actions of humanity. Global warming, extreme weather changes and heavy pollution have come because of human actions, which affect the globe. Evolve Cleaning is here to help you take eco-friendly and green efforts so that you can save money in the long term.
